Biography

Katie Smith
Chemistry Teacher
Colby College, B.A. Biology with a concentration in environmental science

Katie attended boarding school for her high school years and it was a formative experience. It was the first time in her educational experience that she felt valued as an individual by her teachers. She knew that she wanted to create that experience for other students. Katie began her teaching career in outdoor education. She spent time working at a science education field station in the Bahamas, teaching skiing in Switzerland, and leading trips in the Four Corners. She began her classroom experience at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH, followed by The Lowell Whiteman School in Steamboat Springs, CO. Katie coached downhill skiing and crew at Brewster while advising the environmental club and serving as climbing wall facilitator. At Whiteman, Katie led backpacking trips in the Rockies, the high desert, and abroad, in addition to serving as a mountain bike and ski leader. Katie has kept herself involved with education while raising her children. She worked in the learning center at Asheville School, has covered maternity leaves and a sabbatical in the Asheville School science department, taught middle school math in science at Carolina Day School, and tutored numerous students at Asheville School and within the community in both math and science. While her family has resided at Asheville School since 2007, Katie joined the Asheville School science department officially in 2015.

During her ‘free time’ you will find Katie walking and running with her dogs on the trails or supporting her family and participating in their many athletic endeavors
