Shiver wins NCISAA State Tournament in Wrestling, Willis Places Third
Congratulations to Asheville School junior Ryan Shiver who is celebrating this week after winning the NCISAA heavyweight championship in Charlotte on Saturday, February 18. Shiver pinned Charlotte Latin’s Toby Okwara within 1 minute and 15 seconds into this afternoon’s finals to claim the state championship title. During the two-day NCISAA wrestling tournament at Charlotte Country Day, Shiver pinned all four of his opponents.
"It was a thrilling weekend for sure," said the Blues varsity wrestling coach Christopher Arbor. "Ryan's success all season has been inspiring for the whole team, myself included. He's an extraordinary athlete and an extraordinary captain. His leadership off the mat is at least as admirable as his performance on the mat."
Shiver's teammate, senior Ben Willis, placed third in his division at the state level.
"Ben's success was in some ways even more impressive," Arbor said. "He arrived at the tournament ranked 6th, but he fought through the toughest competition to earn his spot on the podium. I'm extraordinarily impressed by both of these young men."
Asheville School Athletic Director Chapman Kern was thrilled to hear the wrestling results from the weekend's tournament.
"We are so proud of each of our wrestlers and Coach Arbor for their accomplishments over the weekend," Kern said. "Ben Willis has been a dedicated and successful wrestler over his career at Asheville School. His third place finish at his final competition speaks to his ability and his determination on the mat. Ben has contributed in so many ways to our boys’ athletic teams over his time here. His dedication to the Blues and his coaches is unmatched.
"Ryan Shiver has been a wonderful addition to our athletic teams this year," she said. "We are thrilled with his State Championship! His 27-1 record this season is one of the best in Asheville School wrestling history. Ryan faced a much bigger opponent in the NCISAA Championship match and pinned him with incredible strength and determination. Ryan has worked very hard all season and has demonstrated strong leadership for the Blues wrestling squad."
