Swimmers Break Four School Records in State Meet

The swimming program at Asheville School continued to shine at the state level on Tuesday, February 21 in Greensboro, NC, with boys' and girls' swimmers breaking four school records and achieving 38 personal best times in 56 total events.

After last week’s first places finished by the boys’ and girls’ swim teams in the CAA Championships, the Blues continue to outpace their own best times at the state level, in an extremely competitive field.

“The state meet was a wonderful wrap-up to a successful 2011-2012 Swim Season,” said Frank Kriegler, head swim coach. "The kids swam really well, and we really went out on a good note."

During the NCISAA state meet, the Asheville School boys’ team placed 7th overall, while the girls’ team finished 15th. The performance of two freshmen swimmers stood out, both breaking school records. Kaylee Pierson broke the 100 Breaststroke record and placed 9th in the event, and also broke the 100 Fly record in an event where she placed 13th. Joey Kreigler broke the 500 Freestyle Record and placed 4th in the event, he also placed 4th in the 200IM.

The Men's 400 Free Relay (Kriegler, Wood, Smith, Hamilton) finished in 4th place with a record-breaking time -- an accomplishment their coach is probably most proud of.

"The 400 Freestyle Relay is probably the best swim I've seen at our school. It was really well done," Frank Kriegler said. "We had a lot of great best times and some really impressive swims."

Senior Zach Smith placed 6th in the 100 Fly. Gunnar Hamilton placed 15th in the 50 Freestyle and 14th in the 100 Freestyle. Junior Robert Cook placed 11th in the 200 Freestyle, and 13th in the 100 Breaststroke. Junior Patrick Wood placed 13th in the 200 Freestyle and 7th in the 500 Freestyle. The Men's 200 Medley Relay (Kriegler, Wood, Smith, Hamilton) placed 7th and the 200 Freestyle Relay (DeRosa, Fenn, Holewsko, Cook) placed 12th. The Women's 400 Freestyle Relay (Moussallem, Bal, Willingham, Pierson) placed 10th and the 200 MedleyRelay (Willingham, Pierson, Moussallem, Napier) placed 15th.
