There is a new addition to this year’s closing weeks: we are in a challenge with our rival, Christ School. The Blues and the Greenies are facing off to see which school can receive more annual fund donations between May 15 and June 30. This challenge is open to all alumni, parents, and friends who have not made a Cody Annual Fund gift this fiscal year.

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys’ tennis team (8-5) after they competed in the first round of the NCISAA 3A State Championships on Saturday, May 12.

The Girls’ and Boys’ track teams at Asheville School clinched the CAA Championship in dramatic fashion on their home track Wednesday, May 10 after a fantastic afternoon of competition.

With major projects wrapping up and AP exams underway, seniors at Asheville School are coming to a unique realization ­-- the time for life beyond high school is about to commence.

In a downpour of rain, students and faculty members competed in the Mini Mud Run at the Woodfin YMCA on May 5. According to the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the obstacles included a 1-mile run, followed by an army mud crawl, mud hill climb, trail run, mind teaser, hay bale hurdles, tire agility, mud pit and more.

Twenty-three Asheville School students joined Mr. Gordon and Mr. Prickett in grabbing a pair of heels and gathering downtown on Saturday, April 28 to participate in Asheville’s third annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event.

Now that yesterday’s storm has passed, we are anticipating beautiful weather as we welcome approximately 300 guests to campus for Alumni Weekend.

Asheville School’s Director of Admission and Enrollment Management Morgan Scoville joined 22,479 other runners in scorching temperatures for the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19.

This past weekend, two students and two faculty members from Asheville School traveled to The Bahamas and pedaled their way across 100 miles of terrain to raise money in the 7th annual Ride for Hope Bahamas.

Two Asheville School students tied for second place in the 23^rd Annual Computer Science High School Programming Contest held at Western Carolina University on Tuesday, April 17. Senior Lawrence Waller and junior Jeff Park competed together against several teams of students from AC Reynolds and McDowell High, finishing just behind a first place AC Reynolds team, and tying for second with another team from AC Reynolds.

The Buncombe County Track Championship meet was held at North Buncombe on a stormy Tuesday afternoon. Throughout delays and hard rain, the Blues performed well.

Raffle tickets are available for a handmade quilt of Asheville School t-shirts! Science teacher Laura Lawrence spent many hours making this 72” x 72” quilt. The raffle will take place graduation weekend on Saturday May 26 at 1:00 PM during graduation lunch. This is a one-of-a-kind gift for a graduating senior or Blues of all ages!

Coming from a family completely immersed in all aspects of the film industry, it’s not a surprise that Asheville School freshman Perla Haney-Jardine is headed to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City later this month for the premiere of her latest film: Future Weather.

Asheville School’s Joey Kriegler made the Citizen-Times All-WNC Swim team as a freshman.

It was a record setting night for the Asheville School Blues Track and Field team during Friday night's Taco Bell track meet in Columbia, SC.

Asheville School alumna Amy “Bellamy” Young, Class of 1987, will be in ABC’s new show Scandal, where she plays First Lady of the United States opposite Tony Goldwyn’s President. It premieres April 5th, and will follow Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays at 10:00pm.

Asheville School junior Ian Van Wye (Asheville, NC) has been selected to attend the 2012 session of Governor’s School of North Carolina. He will participate in the French discipline of the five-week session of Governor’s School, which is held on the campus of Meredith College in Raleigh.

Associate Head of School Jay Bonner has been selected to receive the 2012 Hollins University Teaching Award for his role as a Humanities teacher at Asheville School. His former student Nancy VanNoppen, who graduated from Asheville School in 2007 and is currently a senior at Hollins University, nominated him for this award.

Artistic talent, like blue eyes and perfect pitch, tends to travel the DNA braid. Such is the case with Asheville graphic artist Philip Bell 2005.

Averaging nearly two marathons daily, Jennifer Pharr Davis 2001, of Hendersonville, NC, recently broke the overall speed record for hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 46 days, trimming 26 hours off the previous record-holder's time.

This winter, the Asheville School Board of Trustees voted to honor former Assistant Headmaster for External Affairs, Raymond G. Cruitt, with the school's Award of Merit – the highest honor the School bestows. Ray will be presented the Award of Merit on Saturday night of Alumni Weekend, April 28, 2012.

Asheville School alumnus David Pless (class of 2009) continues his record-breaking Track and Field career as a junior at Bates College. He won his second straight national shot-put title, breaking the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field record in three of his six attempts on Saturday, March 17.

Born on March 30, 1912, Carroll Rogers of Tryon, NC is Asheville School’s oldest living alumnus. Rogers (Class of 1929) and his wife Eleanor will join Asheville School for lunch on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 in honor of his 100th birthday.

Bestselling author of Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley, will speak at Asheville School on Thursday, April 26, at 7:15 pm in the Graham Theater during the school's Founders' Day Convocation.

According to Asheville School’s Bow Tie Society leaders Matthew Gilliland and Robert Cook, wearing a bow tie is a southern tradition they hope to keep thriving, as it goes hand-in-hand with their southern charm.

Three Asheville School football players signed this week to play football at the collegiate level. Running back Malik Risher and quarterback Chad Koehler will play as teammates next year at Presbyterian College, while linebacker Mike Schill has committed to play at The University of the South: Sewanee.

While much of the world catches basketball fever during March, we at Asheville School hope that our school family will catch a little “white and blue fever.”

Junior Ryan Shiver competed in the National Heavyweight tournament in Lehigh, Pennsylvania on February 24th, and finished 11th out of 32 members.

Six Asheville School freshmen girls are learning how to knit while supporting a good cause at the same time. Along with several other students, these freshmen are knitting premie blankets, surgery dolls, super kid capes, and hats to help clothe premature infants at Mission Children’s Hospital in Asheville.

Asheville School Robotics club members returned from their first competition on February 25 with second place medals in hand.

The swimming program at Asheville School continued to shine at the state level on Tuesday, February 21 in Greensboro, NC, with boys' and girls' swimmers breaking four school records and achieving 38 personal best times in 56 total events.

Congratulations to Asheville School junior Ryan Shiver who is celebrating this week after winning the NCISAA heavyweight championship in Charlotte on Saturday, February 18. Shiver pinned Charlotte Latin’s Toby Okwara within 1 minute and 15 seconds into this afternoon’s finals to claim the state championship title. During the two-day NCISAA wrestling tournament at Charlotte Country Day, Shiver pinned all four of his opponents.

Based on preliminary scores from national testing (PSAT), two Asheville School seniors have advanced to the finalist round in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Patrick (P.J.) Eckerd and Lawrence Waller, both from Asheville, NC, are two of 15,000 finalists competing for National Merit Scholarships.

At Mars Hill College on February 10, Asheville School’s girls’ and boys’ swim teams came in first place in the CAA Championships. They will advance to the NCISAA State Championships on February 21.

After returning from Winter Weekend, boarding students participated in the third annual Winter Olympics. This is an opportunity for our residential students to bond with others who live on their individual floors.

John R. Crawley, Director of Music at Asheville School, and Eric Wall, Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Asheville, will present a program of organ and piano selections on Sunday, February 26 at 3:00pm in Asheville School's Boyd Chapel. Larry Kim, class of 2012, will also be featured on the clarinet. The program will include selections by Jacob, Locklair, Ravel, Saint-Saens and other composers. Asheville School’s Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) club has asked students and faculty members to participate in the 2012 Green Cup National Energy Challenge from January 18 through February 15.

For the third year in a row, Asheville School students have demonstrated their impressive mathematical abilities at the Ciphering Time Trials, a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing. In the recent 2011 competition, Asheveille School placed 25th in the nation.

Four Asheville School students recently received numerous awards for their artwork in the Regional Scholastics Art Competition in Western North Carolina. Of the 10 award-winning entries, six will go on to compete in the National Scholastic Competition in New York, NY.

“Threads That Hold Communities Together” is a collection of several quilts created by artists in Western North Carolina. The show will be on display in the Crawford Art Gallery at Asheville School through March 2 and is open to the public.

Asheville School Senior Lawrence Waller was recently named a finalist for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Morehead-Cain Scholarship – one of the oldest and most prestigious four-year merit scholarships in the United States.

National Players, America’s longest-running classical touring company, will perform Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew in Graham Theater on Thursday, January 26 at 7:15 p.m. as part of their 63^rd Annual Tour.

Asheville School junior Jack Qualey (Hilton Head, SC) completed the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Course sponsored by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS and IslandWood located on Bainbridge Island, Washington from December 27 - January 6. Qualey is now certified as a WFR and has the ability to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations.

In addition to juggling all of the responsibilities of being a teacher at Asheville School, Tim Plaehn and Christopher Arbor have found time to share their talents with the Asheville community. Both humanities teachers will present their respective literary works at Malaprop's bookstore in downtown Asheville on February 25 at 7:00 pm.

Asheville School Junior Ryan Shiver showed off his wrestling skills in Charlotte this weekend when he won the heavyweight championship at the Holy Angels Invitational wrestling tournament. During the two-day tournament which finished on Saturday, January 7 at Charlotte Cathlotic, Shiver showed why he’s the state’s top-ranked NCISAA heavyweight wrestler.

Beginning on January 16, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Asheville School will spend a week looking back and celebrating the Civil Rights Movement. The focus will be especially on students, looking at the Little Rock Nine, James Meredith, and the desegregation of Asheville City Schools.

The boys' varsity basketball team at Asheville School will spend part of the December break competing in two holiday tournaments in back to back games for two days in a row.

The fall athletic convocation was held on Thursday, December 1 in Asheville School's Graham Theater.

Out of the 160 student athletes nominated by their respective coaches, Asheville School seniors Malik Risher (Brooklyn, NY) and Anthony Cammarata (Asheville, NC) were two of the 33 football players selected from North Carolina to play in the Oasis Shriners All-Star Classic at Charlotte Country Day School on November 25. They played against the South Carolina All Stars and lost 25-24.

A sea of Asheville School students, faculty members, parents, and alumni surrounded the Blues players after the game, cheering them on for playing with such heart and never giving up in Friday night's 14-10 loss to the First Assembly Eagles. The Blues claimed the runner-up trophy in Asheville School's first state title game in school history.

For the first time in school history, the Asheville School Blues football team will compete in a state title game. The Blues (9-2) will face First Assembly (8-3) tonight at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will decide the state champion in the NCISAA Division II. Dr. Wilkie Wilson, Professor of Prevention Science at Duke University Medical Center, will speak to students and faculty in Graham Theater on November 28 at 8:00 p.m. during a Health, Wellness and Residential Life sponsored program about the teenage brain.

Down by 3 with 4 minutes left to play, Asheville School senior Malik Risher returned a SouthLake Christian kickoff for 95-yards to give the Blues a 21-17 win and the chance to play for the NCISAA Division II state championship for the first time in school history.

The Blues advance to the second round of Division II NCISAA State playoffs for the first time in school history after defeating Harrells Christian Academy 41-37 at home on Saturday, November 5.

Asheville School's cross country teams performed well in the NCISAA state meet this fall, with the boys’ cross country team placing third overall out of 22 teams.

In a game that went the distance Saturday, the Asheville School Blues dominated and held off an undefeated Christ School Greenie team to claim a 15-9 win in the historic rivalry between the two schools.

Saturday marks the 100th anniversary of the first football game between Asheville School and Christ School, a game first played in 1911 and played continuously since 1933. Known as the oldest prep sports rivalry in the Carolinas, the Asheville School Blues host the Christ School Greenies in a game that both school’s alumni consider the most important game of the year.

Asheville School students will perform Almost, Maine on Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28 at 7:15 p.m. in the school’s Graham Theater.

Four Asheville School fall varsity teams will compete in the state tournament, with three teams entering the first round of the NCISAA tournament tomorrow, Friday, October 21.

On October 13, five Asheville School students attended the WNC Media Day at UNC Asheville. Danny Chung, Kenny Hong, Claire Hansen, Amber Lin and Ian Van Wye are members of the Ashnoca staff - Asheville School's student paper.

Asheville School’s cross country team has a lot to be proud of this year, with runners recording some of the fastest times in recent school history and a boys' team that’s on a winning streak.

Asheville School students were greeted by an archway of blue and white balloons in the dining hall this week - kicking off Girls’ Sports Day, an annual celebration of Asheville School’s female athletes. First organized in 1990, Girls’ Sports Day has grown into an enthusiastic weeklong event honoring female sports teams, including all Asheville School girls participating in mountaineering and equestrian.

An international authority in the college admission world will speak to Asheville School parents during Family Weekend 2011 on Saturday, October 1 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Walker Arts Center’s Graham Theater.

Asheville School’s Mountaineering Program recently joined the ranks of the world’s top tier outdoor programs after it became one of only 11 secondary schools worldwide to receive an Association of Experiential Education Accreditation.

Student and faculty musicians from Asheville School will take the stage at Pack Square in downtown Asheville on Thursday, September 1 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in an Orientation Week concert the school has dubbed — Shindig with the Blues.

For the fifth year in a row, Asheville School will begin the year with the largest number of students in school history. With the 111-year-old institution’s Opening Day set for Saturday, August 27, Asheville School will welcome 275 students to campus, 113 of whom are new students.

It took 46 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes for Jennifer Pharr Davis '01 to finish her thru-hike of the 2,181 mile Appalachian Trail in record time - a record that she now holds outright after setting the women's record in 2008.

Pharr Davis '01, of Asheville, set the record for the fastest thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail after Sunday's climb to the summit of Springer Mountain in Georgia. The previous record holder, Andrew Thompson, set the record in 2005 after finishing in 47 days, 13 hours and 31 minutes.

Morgan Scoville joins Asheville School this year as the Director of Admission and Enrollment Management. We took the time to catch up with the new member of our community on his background and hopes for this year.

The Asheville Citizen-Times named Asheville School’s Randy Ashley as the All-Western North Carolina Track and Field boys’ coach of the year.

Asheville School recently named Roger Harris as the new Head Football Coach for the Blues. Harris, who served as the Blues’ assistant football coach for the past two seasons, says he hopes to continue where head coach Matt Neville left off during the 2011-12 season.

Following Asheville School's graduation, Director of Student Activities Michelle Brooks and her husband took seven students on an adventure through Italy. They have seen Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Umbria, Tuscany and more! They've eaten gelato, and visited many places they had only seen in history books. Recording more CAA All-Conference athletes than any of the past five years, Asheville School had a very successful 2010-2011. On Thursday, May 26, several student athletes were recognized for their accomplishments at the 2011 Athletic Awards Banquet.

During the 2011 Spring Choral Concert on May 19, Asheville School students performed seven pieces in Graham Theater under the direction of Asheville School’s Director of Music, John Crawley, who also served as the pianist for the show. Asheville School's Class of 2011 celebrated Graduation Day on Saturday, May 28 as they received their diplomas on the William Boyd Chapel lawn during the School’s 111^th commencement.

Asheville School’s boys’ track team brought home the 3A NCISAA Runner-Up trophy on Saturday, May 21, thanks to some first place finishes by seniors, and several record-breaking performances.

As Asheville School’s 111th commencement ceremony approaches, the school’s 77 seniors credit their teachers for preparing them to enter some of the most competitive and selective colleges and universities in the world.

Asheville School recently asked students, faculty, alumni, parents, and friends to submit their best photo of our campus in bloom for a photo contest. Entries were uploaded to an album on Facebook, where our fans voted for the best of the best through Friday, March 20 – and we are happy to announce their decisions.

During the spring dance recital on May 12 and 13, the creativity of costumes and set design complimented the extraordinary choreography of the circus-themed recital. The audience was blown away with house of mirror and costume illusions, eerie puppetry, along with lots of very impressive dancing.

After discovering invasive species over-taking parts of the campus forest, Asheville School decided to use alternative methods to take a bite out of the problem.
