Asheville School alumnus and Trustee Bill Francis 1964 of Prestonburg, Kentucky was featured by Big Sandy Community Technical College.

With major projects wrapping up and AP exams underway, seniors at Asheville School are coming to a unique realization ­-- the time for life beyond high school is about to commence.

Now that yesterday’s storm has passed, we are anticipating beautiful weather as we welcome approximately 300 guests to campus for Alumni Weekend.

Asheville School’s Director of Admission and Enrollment Management Morgan Scoville joined 22,479 other runners in scorching temperatures for the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19.

This past weekend, two students and two faculty members from Asheville School traveled to The Bahamas and pedaled their way across 100 miles of terrain to raise money in the 7th annual Ride for Hope Bahamas.

Two Asheville School students tied for second place in the 23^rd Annual Computer Science High School Programming Contest held at Western Carolina University on Tuesday, April 17. Senior Lawrence Waller and junior Jeff Park competed together against several teams of students from AC Reynolds and McDowell High, finishing just behind a first place AC Reynolds team, and tying for second with another team from AC Reynolds.

Raffle tickets are available for a handmade quilt of Asheville School t-shirts! Science teacher Laura Lawrence spent many hours making this 72” x 72” quilt. The raffle will take place graduation weekend on Saturday May 26 at 1:00 PM during graduation lunch. This is a one-of-a-kind gift for a graduating senior or Blues of all ages!

Coming from a family completely immersed in all aspects of the film industry, it’s not a surprise that Asheville School freshman Perla Haney-Jardine is headed to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City later this month for the premiere of her latest film: Future Weather.

Asheville School alumna Amy “Bellamy” Young, Class of 1987, will be in ABC’s new show Scandal, where she plays First Lady of the United States opposite Tony Goldwyn’s President. It premieres April 5th, and will follow Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays at 10:00pm.

Associate Head of School Jay Bonner has been selected to receive the 2012 Hollins University Teaching Award for his role as a Humanities teacher at Asheville School. His former student Nancy VanNoppen, who graduated from Asheville School in 2007 and is currently a senior at Hollins University, nominated him for this award.

Artistic talent, like blue eyes and perfect pitch, tends to travel the DNA braid. Such is the case with Asheville graphic artist Philip Bell 2005.

This winter, the Asheville School Board of Trustees voted to honor former Assistant Headmaster for External Affairs, Raymond G. Cruitt, with the school's Award of Merit – the highest honor the School bestows. Ray will be presented the Award of Merit on Saturday night of Alumni Weekend, April 28, 2012.

Averaging nearly two marathons daily, Jennifer Pharr Davis 2001, of Hendersonville, NC, recently broke the overall speed record for hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 46 days, trimming 26 hours off the previous record-holder's time.

Bestselling author of Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley, will speak at Asheville School on Thursday, April 26, at 7:15 pm in the Graham Theater during the school's Founders' Day Convocation.

Asheville School alumnus David Pless (class of 2009) continues his record-breaking Track and Field career as a junior at Bates College. He won his second straight national shot-put title, breaking the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field record in three of his six attempts on Saturday, March 17.

Born on March 30, 1912, Carroll Rogers of Tryon, NC is Asheville School’s oldest living alumnus. Rogers (Class of 1929) and his wife Eleanor will join Asheville School for lunch on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 in honor of his 100th birthday.

While much of the world catches basketball fever during March, we at Asheville School hope that our school family will catch a little “white and blue fever.”

Asheville School Robotics club members returned from their first competition on February 25 with second place medals in hand.

Congratulations to Asheville School junior Ryan Shiver who is celebrating this week after winning the NCISAA heavyweight championship in Charlotte on Saturday, February 18. Shiver pinned Charlotte Latin’s Toby Okwara within 1 minute and 15 seconds into this afternoon’s finals to claim the state championship title. During the two-day NCISAA wrestling tournament at Charlotte Country Day, Shiver pinned all four of his opponents.

Based on preliminary scores from national testing (PSAT), two Asheville School seniors have advanced to the finalist round in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Patrick (P.J.) Eckerd and Lawrence Waller, both from Asheville, NC, are two of 15,000 finalists competing for National Merit Scholarships.

Asheville School’s Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) club has asked students and faculty members to participate in the 2012 Green Cup National Energy Challenge from January 18 through February 15.

In honor of Asheville School’s beloved Spencer Crawford and those art teachers who came before, we are asking you to participate in the Annual Alumni Exhibition by submitting current artwork! The show will be hanging from mid-March through Alumni Weekend 2012 (April 27-29).

Beginning on January 16, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Asheville School will spend a week looking back and celebrating the Civil Rights Movement. The focus will be especially on students, looking at the Little Rock Nine, James Meredith, and the desegregation of Asheville City Schools.

The boys' varsity basketball team at Asheville School will spend part of the December break competing in two holiday tournaments in back to back games for two days in a row.

A sea of Asheville School students, faculty members, parents, and alumni surrounded the Blues players after the game, cheering them on for playing with such heart and never giving up in Friday night's 14-10 loss to the First Assembly Eagles. The Blues claimed the runner-up trophy in Asheville School's first state title game in school history.

Down by 3 with 4 minutes left to play, Asheville School senior Malik Risher returned a SouthLake Christian kickoff for 95-yards to give the Blues a 21-17 win and the chance to play for the NCISAA Division II state championship for the first time in school history.

The Blues advance to the second round of Division II NCISAA State playoffs for the first time in school history after defeating Harrells Christian Academy 41-37 at home on Saturday, November 5.

Asheville School's cross country teams performed well in the NCISAA state meet this fall, with the boys’ cross country team placing third overall out of 22 teams.

In a game that went the distance Saturday, the Asheville School Blues dominated and held off an undefeated Christ School Greenie team to claim a 15-9 win in the historic rivalry between the two schools.

Asheville School students will perform Almost, Maine on Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28 at 7:15 p.m. in the school’s Graham Theater.

Four Asheville School fall varsity teams will compete in the state tournament, with three teams entering the first round of the NCISAA tournament tomorrow, Friday, October 21.

Out of the 160 student athletes nominated by their respective coaches, Asheville School seniors Malik Risher (Brooklyn, NY) and Anthony Cammarata (Asheville, NC) were two of the 33 football players selected from North Carolina to play in the Oasis Shriners All-Star Classic.

Twenty-five goats have returned to Asheville School’s natural forest to help eliminate invasive plants on campus thanks to an environmentally safe approach supported by the school’s Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) club.

Asheville School students were greeted by an archway of blue and white balloons in the dining hall this week - kicking off Girls’ Sports Day, an annual celebration of Asheville School’s female athletes. First organized in 1990, Girls’ Sports Day has grown into an enthusiastic weeklong event honoring female sports teams, including all Asheville School girls participating in mountaineering and equestrian.

Recording more CAA All-Conference athletes than any of the past five years, Asheville School had a very successful 2010-2011. On Thursday, May 26, several student athletes were recognized for their accomplishments at the 2011 Athletic Awards Banquet.

Asheville School's Class of 2011 celebrated Graduation Day on Saturday, May 28 as they received their diplomas on the William Boyd Chapel lawn during the School’s 111^th commencement.

As Asheville School’s 111th commencement ceremony approaches, the school’s 77 seniors credit their teachers for preparing them to enter some of the most competitive and selective colleges and universities in the world.

After discovering invasive species over-taking parts of the campus forest, Asheville School decided to use alternative methods to take a bite out of the problem.

Asheville School's Dance Program will provide the sparkle, the feathers, and the balloons and let you run away with the circus as they present Le Cirque des Montagnes Bleues on Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13. The performance begins at 7:15 pm in the Walker Arts Center's Graham Theater.

In a recent Honors Biology research project, students studied beaver behaviors and found evidence of beavers on our campus.

Raising money to provide loans to developing countries may not be on the minds of most teenagers – but a group of Asheville School students have embraced the idea of supporting global entrepreneurship by creating a student-led microfinance society.

Champion sailor, award-winning scholar and bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick will speak at Asheville School on Thursday, April 28 at 7:15 pm in the Graham Theater during the school’s Founders’ Day Convocation. This presentation is part of the Asheville School Pope Series for Humanities, and is free and open to the public, but with limited seating available on a first come first seated basis. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. to the public.

After delivering a riveting speech to the Asheville School community on March 24 about his medical volunteer work in Africa, Dr. John Lawrence of Asheville, NC was presented with the Award of Merit from Asheville School.

Songs in the Forest, featuring artwork by alumnus Stephen Brooks 1980, and Immersion, featuring artwork from Ursula Gullow, Spencer Herr, Alli Good, Angela Eastman and Kate Brooks, will open at the Asheville School Walker Arts Center on Thursday, March 31, 2011 with a reception for the artists from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The show will be on display through May 1 and is open to the public Monday – Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Asheville School alumnus David Pless (class of 2009) recently made history for his Bates College Bobcats by becoming the first Bobcat to ever claim the Division III NCAA championship in shot put on Saturday, March 12.

Former Asheville School Trustee John Lawrence will speak to students and faculty about his medical volunteer work in Africa on Thursday night, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Graham Theater. His talk is free and open to the public with limited seating available.

On Saturday, February 19, Asheville School Alumnus David Pless 2009 established a new all time shot put record for Bates College with a throw of 55 feet 2.75 inches to capture first place in the New England Division III Track and Field Championships at Springfield College. A week after scoring his 1000th career point as a Blues basketball player, Asheville School senior Alex Avery was named to the CAA All-Conference team.

"I am very proud of Alex Avery and his basketball accomplishments over his career at Asheville School. Alex's perseverance through his teams successes and failures is noteworthy," says Chapman Kern, Asheville School Athletic Director. "Alex has demonstrated the desire to compete to the best of his ability in each and every game of his career. His leadership and determination have been recognized, as he was voted Co-Captain by his teammates in both his junior and senior seasons. I am so happy for Alex to have achieved this 1000 point scoring landmark and even more proud of his recent naming to the 2011 Carolinas Athletic Association Boys' Basketball All-Conference team. Alex will be greatly missed as he moves on the play at the next level."

Sophomore Melinda Coker has been skiing as long as she can remember, and her skills certainly set her apart this season as she was named top female skier for the season. A captain on Asheville School’s Ski Team this winter, Coker is credited for the ski team’s overall success this season.

Asheville School Sophomore Maggie Lindsey may be one of the youngest players on her team, but her age didn't stop her from sinking a record number of 3-point shots for the Blues girls' varsity basketball team.

Asheville School has some of the best high school mathematicians in the country, as demonstrated by their 22nd place finish in the 2010 Ciphering Time Trials, a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing.

During the offseason, Asheville School Senior Will Patton was kicking for swim season to start – literally. Turns out Patton’s broken arm and extra focus on kicking helped his team finish in first place in the Buncombe County Meet on Saturday, January 15 at Asheville School.

Students at Asheville School are quickly becoming experts about the U.S. Constitution — thanks to the Humanities department's emphasis this year on the nation's founding documents.

The Chalk Line opens at Asheville School's Walker Arts Center on Thursday, January 20, 2011 with a reception for the artists from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The show will be on display in the Crawford Art Gallery through March 5 and is open to the public.

The Lessons and Carols candlelight service is a favorite at Asheville School. With a dusting of snow covering campus on Sunday, December 5, the service had an extra element of festiveness.

The school store will have a Holiday Open House on December 2, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. to allow students, faculty, and families an extra chance to shop. Please come out and enjoy some light refreshments and support Asheville School.

Asheville School recently hosted an alumni and friends reception in New York City at The Terrace Club. Thirty-six alumni and friends joined Head of School Arch Montgomery and Assistant Head of School for Advancement John Thorsen for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

A group of fellow campers and former mountaineering program alumni recently gathered at the Snowbird Lodge near Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest to celebrate James G. (Pop) Hollandsworth’s 95th birthday. Hollandsworth served as the director of mountaineering at Asheville School for more than 25 years. Alumni attending included Larry Pless '71, Karl Koon '74 and Tom Hunnicutt '81.

Asheville School alumnus Patrick Darab 2005 (Hickory, NC) is in several spotlights. He recently sang in an episode of Glee – and has signed a contract to work on seven more episodes of the Fox hit series about a high school Glee Club.

On Saturday, November 13 on the Chuck & Tura Carter Court at Asheville School, the boys’ varsity basketball team claimed their second victory in a row over the Asheville School alumni team 66-58. The alumni team won six out of the eight previous Alumni basketball games.

Last year the Blues varsity basketball team beat the Alumni team for the first time in seven years at the annual alumni basketball game. On Saturday, November 13 - the teams will have a chance to play against each other again at 2:00 p.m. on the Chuck and Tura Carter Court.

Students at Asheville School are preparing for this weekend's 84th Christ School football game with some unique spirit building activities.

With the Christ School game a mere three weeks away (October 30), Asheville School is preparing to battle it out against the Greenies. There will be a week-long celebration leading into Christ School Weekend activities.

The Asheville School Blues football team was recently highlighted by the Asheville Citizen-Times in a front page Sports feature about their upcoming season. Now that Asheville School alumnus Gary Shields 2002 has competed on ABC’s popular game show Wipeout, the Los Angeles resident can claim he’s worn a Tina Turner wig in front of millions.

Asheville School Alumnus Gary Sheilds 2002 will make an appearance on ABC's Wipeout at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 1. Tune in to watch Gary in Episode 4 (Season 3) of Wipeout. We are told he will be wearing a Tina Turner wig!

June Lenoci, a former Asheville School board member and parent of three alumni (Peter '83, Matt '85, and Tom '86), passed away on Saturday, June 19th.

Asheville School is greening its lawn care services with three propane-powered mowers, thanks in part to an alumnus and a unique propane supply program provided by Blossman Gas.

Harris Baker, an Asheville School Class of '74 alumnus and president of HBH Gas Systems of Austin, Texas, donated three new propane mowers to his alma mater. Blossman Gas – the nation's largest independent propane company – will provide the school a hassle-free, year-round mower fuel supply.

Asheville School's Varsity Boys' tennis team earned a #9 seed in the 3A NCISAA tennis tournament to be held in Greensboro, NC on Saturday, May 8.

Asheville School’s Girls’ Soccer team defeated Shannon Forest 2-1 on Tuesday, May 4 to earn the CAA Conference Co-Championship! The Blues tied Asheville Christian Academy for the CAA title. The girls ended CAA play with a final CAA record of 5-1-4 and an overall record of 7-2-4.

Leslie Bradshaw, a French teacher at Asheville School since 1982, was recently named to the executive board of the North Carolina American Association of Teachers of French. Bradshaw, who was selected as the Teacher of the Year by the NC-AATF this spring, will serve as vice president for a 2-year term beginning July 2010. She will become chapter president for a 2-year term beginning in July of 2012 and will remain on the executive board for two additional years as past president.

Four former faculty members received Asheville School's highest honor on Saturday night, April 24 during Asheville School's Alumni Weekend 2010 - a weekend that attracted a crowd of more than 340 alumni, friends, and former faculty members. The weekend was the best-attended Alumni Weekend since the Centennial.

During April's Trustees Weekend, Asheville School's Board of Trustees honored the service of four trustees whose terms end July 1.

While residents of Asheville were highly anticipating a weekend visit from President Obama and the First Lady, New York Times columnist and political journalist David Brooks analyzed the President’s character before a packed crowd in Asheville School’s Graham Theater.

Asheville School senior and track and field co-captain Bret Fickes (Hendersonville, NC) won the 300 meter hurdles in the recent Buncombe County Track meet on Tuesday, April 20.

This Thursday, April 22, Asheville School will host renowned journalist and writer, David Brooks for a 7:15 p.m. lecture, followed by a question and answer period, in Walker Arts Center’s Graham Theater. Brooks’s visit is free and open to the public, but seating is extremely limited.

Freshman Dominick Cammarata struck out 15 batters in the 14-0 victory over Andrews on Friday, April 9. The Blues also defeated the WCAA Trailblazers in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday, April 10, 5-3.

Asheville School’s own Frank Kriegler was recently named All-WNC Swimming coach of the year by the Asheville Citizen-Times. Kriegler led the Blues boys to an undefeated season with championships in the Buncombe County and Carolinas Athletic Association meets. Congratulations to coach Kriegler and to all Blues swimmers this season.

Jessica Steele, Asheville School Class of 2006 and a senior Carolina Scholar from Hilton Head Island, was recently named the University of South Carolina’s Outstanding Woman of the Year for 2010.

The Blues have had a very successful wrestling season this year. While wrestling some incredible teams, the Blues have fought for an impressive 14-11 record, with nine out of 13 wrestlers with over ten wins this winter.

During his last 14 years of coaching swimming at Asheville School, Frank Kriegler has certainly witnessed some winning teams. But what’s unique this year is the number of talented swimmers competing on the boys’ and girls’ swim teams.

The Asheville School Boys’ and Girls’ swim teams placed first Tuesday in a home swim meet vs. Henderson High and West Henderson High.

On January 28 at 7:15 p.m., National Players, America’s longest-running classical touring company, will perform Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at Asheville School’s Graham Theater in the Walker Arts Center as part of their 61st Annual Tour. Admission is free and open to the public.
