One of the primary benefits of a boarding school education is the sense of independence and maturity that it provides for its students. However, independence does not mean our students have to face the year without support. Our faculty and staff are keenly aware of the needs and concerns that adolescents face and have in place a variety of resources to support and serve the needs of our student body.
Medical Services
The Warner Arms Infirmary is located on the first floor of Anderson Hall. The school’s doctor visits the infirmary on Mondays and Fridays, and a nurse is on duty at all times when school is in session. The school's nurses approve and record all medical appointments for both day and boarding students, and the nurses are responsible for dispensing all medication.
Counselor’s Office
The school employs an on-campus, full-time professional school counselor who is available to students, families, faculty and staff for the purpose of assisting with various emotional and social concerns that may arise.
Short-term, individual counseling is provided by the school counselor and can be obtained by self-referral or through consultation with another community member. Should more extensive or longer-term counseling be needed, the school counselor coordinates the referral to an appropriate outside professional and arranges for transportation to the practitioner’s office.
The school counselor subscribes to a policy of confidentiality in all dealings with persons who seek help, though safety concerns provide an exception to such a policy. When issues regarding safety arise, the confidentiality policy will defer to safety concerns.

Campus Technology
Computers have become an indispensable tool in the 21st century. To that end, the school has worked diligently over the past decade to ensure the campus network supports the school’s mission while simultaneously providing the resources necessary for teaching, learning and communicating.
The backbone of our computer system is a campus-wide switched gigabit fiber network. Each member of our community has a secure login, e-mail account, file storage and access to the full suite of MS Office software. Each dormitory room has network access, though this connection is only available from 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. Additionally, Internet access is regulated by a robust content filtering system.
Many students elect to bring their own computers and peripherals, but there are numerous workstations around campus for public use. Wireless Internet access is available throughout campus to most faculty and day students.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center is a resource for students and teachers. We work with students on developing their organizational and study skills in an effort to help them become independent learners. We also provide daily help in specific subjects.
Every year, 65-75 percent of Asheville School students use the Learning Center. For most students, the Learning Center is a voluntary resource. Approximately 20 students are assigned at any given time. They may be assigned for a period of three weeks to 10 months, depending on their progress. These students come in daily during their free period and work with the Learning Center staff.
Most students stop in for help with:

- College essays
- Lab reports
- English papers
- Study skills
- Time management
Advisor system
Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who is concerned about the student in all facets of school life. A student meets with his or her advisor at least once a week. Advisors offer guidance on a range of personal and academic matters, including college planning and summer job opportunities. When grades are sent home, faculty advisors meet with students to discuss their progress at the end of each term and write reports to parents.
