On Tuesday, August 15, members of the Asheville School community joined the Abernethy family and Head of School Arch Montgomery to dedicate the Abernethy Tennis Pavilion in honor and memory of Jill Abernethy.
Montgomery read the formal dedication: "This pavilion celebrates the memory and spirit of Jill Rowe Abernethy (1967-2015), an Asheville School parent. Jill exemplified grace, strength and humility and brought a zest for living to everyone fortunate to share time with her. May all who play here demonstrate the same values—on the court and in their lives."
Dr. William Abernethy then spoke about his wife, her love for her family and community, and her commitment to watching her children's tennis matches come rain or shine. Asheville School Chaplin Gus Schill read a prayer, and then the Abernethy family officially opened the pavilion with the cut of a ribbon.Associate Head of School for Advancement Dan Seiden thanks the Abernethy family and everyone who made the pavilion possible. "This is a special project—one that speaks to the sense of community and family that we hold dear," Seiden said. "Like its namesake, the pavilion stands strong and provides valuable perspective. A place to gather, celebrate, and reflect, the Abernethy Tennis Pavilion is a most-impressive addition to the Asheville School campus. We humbly accept this gift in honor of Jill and remain grateful for the friendship and support of the Abernethy family."
