On Friday, September 8, the Asheville School Varsity Girls Tennis Team pulled out a critical victory against Greensboro Day School. This marked the team's second match of the season compared to Greensboro Day's sixth, and the Blues came out on top 6-3 over the more seasoned team.
"With the Greensboro Day match being our first 3A competition of the year, it was important for us to play well," said Head Coach Derry Roberson. "Before the match, Greensboro Day's only loss was 5-4 to one of the strongest teams in the state—Cary Academy. Winning the match was a tall order, but our girls pulled it off."
Asheville School shined in singles, with Sarah Abernethy '19, Rachel Kuehn '19, Anna Bernstein '20, Lillie Bridges '20 and Blakeney Boldrick '20 winning their matches. In doubles, the Blues won one of three matches, with Abernethy/Kuehn earning a victory.
Roberson says that this early big win bodes well for the rest of the season. "The girls can build from this and keep the momentum going," she said. "I look forward to seeing our doubles teams grow together and learn how to complement each other's playing styles even better. Getting into the state tournament is never a guarantee, due to our mixed 2A and 3A conference, so playing well and proving we deserve to be in the tournament is on our minds."
Asheville School Athletic Director Carl Boland is grateful for the role that the coaches have played in strengthening the team. "Coach Roberson and Coach Pharr have been coaching together in the fall and spring for several years now and make for a fantastic coaching duo," he said. "I am also very pleased with the addition of Laurie Tinnell, a local tennis pro with experience as a head coach at the college level. The fact that our numbers have grown two- and three-fold in girls' tennis over the last couple of years is a testament to all the great work our coaches are doing."
Tennis will continue their season this Friday, September 15, with a home match against Gaston Christian. Join us to cheer on the Blues and follow us on Twitter @avlschoolsports for updates!
