Blues Earn 13 Podium Finishes at NCISAA Division II Track and Field State Championships

Asheville School athletes had an outstanding showing during the 2019 NCISAA Division II Track and Field State Championships at Gaston Christian School on May 17 and 18.
Individuals and relay teams were seeded top-three in 10 different events, and collectively the Blues came through, earning top-three finishes in 13 events over the weekend. Both teams earned fifth place finishes overall – the boys team earned 69 points and the girls team earned 67.
Asheville School senior Major Eason won a state championship in the Boys 800m with a time of 1:56.82.
Three Blues relay teams also won state championships over the weekend.
The Boys 4×100 relay team – Kris Castro, Heath Chase, Chris Hemphill and Titus Morrison –won a state title with a time of 44.20. The Boys 4×400 relay team – Major Eason, Charlie Kingree, Declan Mettee and Titus Morrison – earned a state championship with a time of 3.26.80. The Girls 4×200 relay team – Alyssa Drendel, Mecca Morrison, Sophie Mosley and Halle Perry – claimed a win with a time of 1:48.64.
Four Blues individuals and teams earned runner-up in the championships.
Chris Hemphill finished second in the Boys 100m with a time of 11.25. In discus, Morgan Oxenreider earned a silver medal for her throw of 96’1. The Girls 4×100 relay team – Alyssa Drendel, Mecca Morrison, Sophie Mosley and Halle Perry – placed second with a time of 52.47. The Boys 4×200 relay team – Kris Castro, Heath Chase, Raja Gopal and Titus Morrison – finished second with a time of 1:32.52.
Asheville School athletes racked up five bronze medals over the course of the weekend.
Senior Kamryn Graham placed third in both discus (91′ 5) and in shotput (33′ 6). On the boys’ side, RayJ McDay earned bronze in the shot put with a throw of 40′ 11.5. Halle Perry earned third in the Girls 100m with a time of 13.21. The Boys 4×800 relay team – Zach Drendel, Major Eason, Satchel McCutchen and Declan Mettee – finished third with a time of 8:28.
