Honoring Antanette Mosley ’87: A Life of Service and Leadership

On Sunday, January 19, 2025, Antanette Mosley ’87 received a prestigious Community Service Award from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County. This recognition is a testament to her lifelong commitment to making a difference in her community.

Currently serving as the Vice-Mayor of Asheville, Antanette’s dedication to public service runs deep. Raised by parents who instilled in her the values of civil rights and social justice, Antanette’s journey of breaking barriers began early. At just five years old, she made history by integrating a local elementary school, setting the stage for a lifetime of courageous leadership.

During her years at Asheville School, Antanette’s talents shone brightly in many areas. She was a standout athlete, playing field hockey, running track, and serving as captain of the basketball team during her Sixth Form year. Her creative spirit flourished as a writer, copy editor, and business manager for Ashnoca. She captivated audiences through her roles in three plays and contributed her voice to the Chorus, Mixed Ensemble, and four iterations of The Show! As a member of the Dramatic Society, she further enriched the school’s vibrant arts community.

After graduating in 1987, Antanette attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by earning her Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law. Returning to Asheville, she joined the City Council in 2020 and continues to champion causes close to her heart, including affordable housing and education. She serves as a vital liaison to the Asheville Housing Authority and Asheville City Schools, addressing critical issues and fostering meaningful change.

Antanette’s leadership has been especially vital in the wake of Hurricane Helene, as she provides steadfast support to help Asheville residents recover and rebuild. Her compassion and dedication embody the spirit of service that defines Asheville School alumni.

We are deeply proud to celebrate Antanette Mosley’s remarkable achievements and her well-deserved recognition by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County. Her story inspires us all to lead with courage, passion, and purpose.
