The John M. Crawford, Jr. Art Gallery presents “Look Up Asheville: A Photographic Exploration of Asheville Architecture.” The exhibition, showcasing vivid photographs by local photographer Michael Oppenheim, opens on Thursday, January 23. Community members are invited to a reception in the gallery on Thursday, January 23, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. for an evening with the photographer. The exhibition runs through Friday, February 28.
The “Look Up Asheville” exhibit highlights some of his favorite images from his two books on Asheville architecture: Look Up Asheville: Volumes I & II. This exhibit contains photographs printed on canvas as gallery wraps and traditional archival photographic prints. This exhibit will feature previously shown work and new prints that have not been displayed before.
For close to two years Michael photographed sixty of Asheville’s prized buildings. Grateful Steps Publishing approached Michael to turn his camera and artistic eye on the diverse mix of historic buildings that Asheville has to offer. They were particularly interested in focusing on the the rich details and architectural adornments that made each building unique. The work of such brilliant architects as Richard Sharp Smith, Douglas Ellington, James Vester Miller and I.M Pei are featured. North Carolina poet laureate Laura Hope-Gill provided the text delving into the rich history of these architects, buildings, and the city itself.
