Commencement FAQs

How do I request an extra ticket for the Baccalaureate service?

Due to limited seating in Boyd Chapel, admission to the Baccalaureate service is by ticket only. Although we would like all who attend the Baccalaureate service to be seated in the chapel, it is not physically possible. The seniors sit together in the front of the chapel and do not need tickets. This year’s senior class is quite large so each senior family will receive two tickets for seats inside the chapel.  All overflow guests can watch the service in Graham Theater.  You can put your name on a waiting list for extra tickets by calling/emailing Phyllis Montgomery.  The tickets will be available at the tent across from the chapel after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24. This year the Baccalaureate speaker is Arch Montgomery.

Is there a dinner in the dining hall following Baccalaureate?

Following the Baccalaureate service, there will be a dinner for all seniors and 4 members of their families or guests. It is a time to gather as a class, for parents to mingle and to speak with faculty members. After the Senior Slideshow, seniors who have not checked out of the dorms may go off campus with their parents, but must sign out/in with the Hall Parent on duty and return to campus by 10:00 p.m. Please note that it is a closed campus for underformers; they are not allowed to leave campus.

What if we need handicap access on the day of Graduation?

On Saturday morning, the roads to campus are blocked and you will be directed where to park.  Should you need handicap access for someone in your party, please contact Phyllis Montgomery:  montgomeryp@ashevilleschool.org or 828-254-6345 Ext 4015.

What is the rain plan for Graduation?

If it rains, Commencement will take place in the Chuck and Tura Carter Gymnasium in the Rodgers Athletic Center.

Do I need to RSVP for meals?

Yes. Please RSVP HERE so we will have an accurate food count for our meals during Commencement Weekend.

Are seniors allowed to leave campus on the week leading up to Graduation?

Exams begin May 20 and continue through May 24. Seniors do not have to move out of their rooms before Saturday; however, seniors may move out of the dorm to stay with their parents after their last exam. Seniors will not be allowed to sleep off campus unless all their belongings are moved out of the dorm, the room is cleaned, and a Hall Parent has signed them out. Once a senior has moved off campus, the student is not allowed back on dorm. All seniors must move out of the dorms completely by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Only international students with early flights on Sunday may remain overnight on Saturday the 25th.

The Athletic Banquet Dinner on Thursday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m. is required for all students. Any senior who has moved off campus prior to Thursday night will have to return to campus for the banquet in classroom dress.

Senior choir members must return to campus Friday for a 4:30 p.m. rehearsal. All other seniors must return on Friday at 5:15 p.m. for a graduation rehearsal and the Baccalaureate service.

Will there be an official videographer and photographer at Graduation?

Yes. We will have an official videographer and photographer at Graduation this year. Both the Baccalaureate service and Commencement will be shared on a livestream at locallive.tv/ashevilleschool. We will provide a downloadable version of the Commencement video for all parents following the ceremony. We will also provide families with a link to downloadable high resolution images from the entire weekend.

  • Friday: On May 24, Seniors will attend Baccalaureate Service and Dinner. Limited seating for families will be available, but we will provide overflow seating in Graham Theater for families who want to watch the livestream of our service; Note that exams also take place on Friday.
  • Saturday: All seniors must be at the Lawrence Hall steps at 9:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday for the class picture. It is Memorial Day Weekend, so please anticipate extra traffic that morning and please be on time. Following the photo, seniors will line-up at the gym. Commencement begins at 10 a.m. on the Chapel Lawn. Buffet Lunch is planned for all guests following the ceremony.
  • Saturday After Commencement: Dorm faculty members will be present to support the final moving out process. We take great pride in our facilities and in teaching students to care for them properly. When they leave for the summer, we are hopeful that their rooms will meet these basic standards: all school furniture present; room otherwise empty; floor, bureau and desk clean; and all trash taken to the dumpster. Any support you could add to this process as your child is moving out is greatly appreciated. Dorms should be empty of belongings and reasonably clean by 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 25.
