Asheville School Celebrates 120th Opening Day with Record Enrollment and New Head of School

Saturday, August 17 marked Asheville School’s 120th Opening Day. It promises to be a banner year for the school: in addition to celebrating record enrollment, it was the first Opening Day for newly appointed Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro, who is the ninth head in Asheville School’s history.

A 1984 graduate of Asheville School, Sgro is the first alumnus to serve as the school’s head. He is excited to be ‘home’ and ready to take on the coming year.  

“I am looking forward to getting to know the students and getting to know the faculty members and really becoming a part of the Asheville School family,” Sgro said. “I am thrilled to be at Asheville School, and I plan on leading the school as it continues to take its place as one of the premier boarding schools in the United States.”     

Sgro brings with him a wealth of experience as he begins his new role at Asheville School. Most recently, he served as the Head of School of Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, Georgia. An advocate for boarding and independent schools, Sgro serves on the boards of The Association for Boarding Schools, Spoleto Study Abroad, and The Heads Network.  

On Opening Day, Asheville School welcomed 295 students from 16 states and 18 countries. This marks the 13th consecutive year that Asheville School has achieved record enrollment numbers. 

Asheville School Director of Admission John Smith says that this feat is thanks to Asheville School’s community. “Our admission efforts have once again been successful because of the Asheville School community and our commitment to the values we stand for,” Smith said. “Our students learn and grow in a safe and small community where they are known and encouraged to reach out of their comfort zones.”
