Boys Win County Championship Swim Meet, Girls Place Third

Asheville School’s Boys Swim team placed first in the Buncombe County championship meet over the weekend, beating second place Christ School by more than 200 points, while the Blues girls team placed third overall.

Sophomore Patrick Sleater was named MVP in the county meet for his first place finals time of 1:48.00 in the boys 200 Yard Freestyle and placing first in the boys 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:45.39. Other leaders included junior Crow Thorsen, who was first in the boys 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 53.90 and first in the boys 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:00.48. The Blues took first and second in the boys 200 free and first, second and third in the boys 100 free.

 “We are thrilled that the Buncombe County swim meet was reinstated this year,” said the Blues head swimming coach Sarah Bednar. “Our swimmers had a lot of fun and had great success.  We had multiple PRs and top finishes including a first, second and third in the boys 100 freestyle. We are also very proud of Patrick Sleater, who was named the meet’s MVP.”

Junior Katie Bauer led the way for the girls, placing second in the girls 200 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Freestyle. Sophomore Alyssa Drendel took second in the 50 Yard Freestyle the girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay of Katie Bauer, Alyssa Drendal, Sara Frances Jones and Lacy Westle placed second.

Athletic Director Carl Boland ’99 said he was pleased to see the Blues swim teams prevail in the Buncombe County meet Saturday night. “I’m very proud of both of our teams for a great showing at the Buncombe county championships,” Boland said. “Many of us do not fully appreciate how hard our kids train to prepare themselves to perform at their very best. I am proud of all of their hard work and the results.”
