Gallery Exhibition featuring the Paintings of Skip Rohde

The John M. Crawford, Jr. Art Gallery will host a new exhibition, “Reflections,” featuring the artwork of local artist Skip Rohde. The exhibition is on display beginning September 20 – October 27. On Thursday, October 12, community members are invited for a reception and evening with the painter from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the gallery.

The paintings in this exhibition come from different periods in Skip’s life. Skip was an officer in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, but has always been an artist.  After he retired from the Navy, he went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a concentration in painting, from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.  Following graduation in 2003, Skip became a full-time artist with a studio in the River Arts District.  His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries across the eastern half of the country.

Skip shares the following about “Reflections:”

Paintings tell stories in very different ways than writing or talking.  They are the artist’s communication in a totally visual language.  Sometimes they are about deep subjects and sometimes they’re just meant to be eye candy.  Sometimes they require study before they reveal their message.  Often that message is very different to different viewers.

Your ideas about what these artworks mean will be different from mine since your life, experiences, ideas, and thought processes are different.  That’s what makes art a conversation.  I love to hear the different interpretations of my artworks as they often show me things I had never thought of before.
