Three Asheville School seniors have earned semifinalist spots in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Maggie Chang, Julia Nolletti and Isoken Omoregbee are three of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide who were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
This round of the National Merit Scholarship Program is decided by students' scores on tests taken during their junior year of high school.
According to a press release from NMSC, "Over 1.6 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants."
Semifinalists are the highest scoring students in each state, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, according to NMSC.
All Semifinalists have the opportunity to continue working towards earning a National Merit Scholarship—they must first apply to be a Finalist and then about half of the Finalists earn a scholarship and the title of Merit Scholar. This year's National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July 2019.
Join us in wishing Nolletti, Omoregbee and Chang congratulations!
